The universe just got a little more mysterious. Astronomers have detected 249 fast radio bursts (FRBs) slamming into Earth’s telescopes within minutes — raising fresh questions about what lies beyond our galaxy. Could this be an unknown astrophysical phenomenon, or something more extraordinary?

The Discovery

In June 2024, scientists using South Africa’s MeerKAT radio telescope recorded a flurry of signals from a repeating source named FRB 20240619D. The initial detection came in the L-band (856–1712 MHz), where three bursts were captured within just two minutes.

Follow-up observations across multiple frequency bands — UHF, L-band, and S-band — revealed an astonishing 249 bursts, making it one of the most active repeating FRBs ever observed.

Why This FRB Stands Out

Researchers noted that the majority of bursts appeared in the L-band, nearly three times more than other frequencies, suggesting the source’s strongest energy is concentrated there. Some bursts also showed a “downward drift” in frequency as they faded — a feature seen in other repeaters.

Despite simultaneous checks with the MeerLICHT optical telescope, astronomers reported no visible light counterpart, meaning the source emits purely in radio waves.

Possible Explanations

While the thought of alien communication always captures public imagination, scientists believe the signals are more likely linked to magnetars — highly magnetized neutron stars capable of releasing immense energy. The extreme polarization patterns and furious repetition rate of FRB 20240619D may hold new clues about how these cosmic powerhouses behave.
