Landslide in Mumbai’s Vikhroli Claims Two Lives After Heavy Rains

Two people were killed and two others injured when a landslide struck a hillside settlement in Mumbai’s Vikhroli early Saturday, following intense overnight rainfall.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the incident occurred around 2:39 am near Jankalyan Society in Varsha Nagar. Soil and rocks slid down the slope and crashed onto a hut where four members of a family were asleep.

All four were rushed to Rajawadi Hospital. Shalu Mishra, 19, and Suresh Mishra, 50, were declared dead on arrival. The other two — Aarti Mishra, 45, and Ruturaj Mishra, 20 — remain in stable condition and are receiving treatment.

Municipal data shows that between 11 pm Friday and 5 am Saturday, Vikhroli recorded over 210 mm of rainfall, one of the heaviest spells in the eastern suburbs. The affected area, part of the Vikhroli Park Site, is classified as a landslide-prone zone and falls under the jurisdiction of the city collector.

The Geological Survey of India has repeatedly flagged several sites in Vikhroli as highly vulnerable to landslides. Many informal settlements in the area are built along steep slopes, leaving residents at constant risk during the monsoon.

Earlier this year, the BMC had issued evacuation notices to families living in such high-risk zones, urging them to shift to safer housing provided by the civic body.
