Bhuvneshwari Sreesanth, the wife of former India cricketer Sreesanth, has strongly criticized former IPL chairman Lalit Modi and former Australia captain Michael Clarke for reigniting the infamous “slap-gate” controversy involving Harbhajan Singh.
The issue resurfaced when Modi appeared on Clarke’s Beyond23 podcast, where he revealed that he had kept unseen footage of the 2008 altercation between Harbhajan and Sreesanth. The video, reportedly taken from stadium security cameras, showed Harbhajan striking Sreesanth with the back of his hand during an IPL match between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings).
The Slap-Gate Incident Revisited
The incident, which saw Sreesanth visibly upset on the field and brought to tears, was one of the most shocking moments in the inaugural season of the IPL. His breakdown was captured on camera, and his teammates, including former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene and former pacer Irfan Pathan, rushed to console him. The incident later became infamously known as “slap-gate.”
Bhuvneshwari’s Furious Response
Reacting to the resurfacing of the clip, Bhuvneshwari expressed her anger on Instagram, calling out both Modi and Clarke for reopening old wounds for the sake of publicity. She accused them of lacking humanity by dragging up an incident that both Sreesanth and Harbhajan had long moved past.
“Shame on you, Lalit Modi and Michael Clarke. You people are not even human to drag up something from 2008 just for your own cheap publicity and views. Both @sreesanthnair36 and Harbhajan have long moved on; they are fathers now with school-going children, and yet you try to throw them back into an old wound. Absolutely disgusting, heartless, and inhuman,” she wrote.
Harbhajan and Sreesanth Have Moved On
Over the years, Harbhajan Singh has publicly admitted that the incident was one of his biggest regrets, while Sreesanth has repeatedly said that he has put the episode behind him. Despite the controversy, both players shared dressing rooms for India, including during the victorious 2007 T20 World Cup campaign in South Africa.
However, the podcast’s revelation of the footage has reignited the debate, with the video circulating widely on social media, drawing attention to an event that both players had left in the past.
