Stumps were called on Day 1 of the second Test between India and South Africa with the Proteas at 247/6. Kuldeep then struck again, removing the in-form Tony de Zorzi for a well-made 85, further pegging back the South African innings. His wrist spin proved difficult to handle as he continued to trouble the batsmen. The double strike shifted the momentum back in India’s favour, injecting renewed energy into the fielders.
Middle Order Collapse
Following the dismissals of Markram and de Zorzi, the South African middle order crumbled under pressure. Kuldeep Yadav continued his impressive spell, picking up his third wicket by dismissing David Bedingham for 12, further denting the South African innings. Mukesh Kumar then returned to dismiss Kyle Verreynne. South Africa found themselves struggling at 215/6, having lost four wickets in quick succession. The Indian bowlers exploited the favourable conditions, extracting both pace and bounce from the surface.
Late Resistance
However, Keshav Maharaj and Marco Jansen showed resilience towards the end of the day, adding an unbroken 32-run partnership to see South Africa through to stumps. Maharaj, in particular, looked composed and determined, while Jansen provided solid support. They ensured that South Africa did not lose any further wickets before the close of play. India will be looking to wrap up the South African innings early on Day 2, while the hosts will aim to build on their overnight partnership and post a competitive total. The second day promises to be crucial in determining the course of the Test match.
The Indian bowlers will be keen to exploit the early morning conditions, while the South African batsmen will need to show resilience and determination to counter the Indian attack. The match is finely poised, with both teams having opportunities to seize the advantage.
