Srinagar, Kashmir – Aga Ruhullah, a prominent political figure in Jammu and Kashmir, has strongly criticized the ongoing police actions against students participating in protests across the region. Ruhullah voiced his concerns following recent demonstrations, primarily centered around alleged discrepancies in the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) examination and broader issues of educational grievances.
The protests have been particularly visible in Srinagar, where students have clashed with law enforcement officials. Reports indicate the use of tear gas and, in some instances, alleged physical force by the police to disperse the demonstrators. Ruhullah condemned these actions, stating that they represent a suppression of legitimate dissent and a violation of students’ rights to peaceful protest.
“The administration’s response to these protests is deeply concerning,” Ruhullah stated in a press conference. “Instead of addressing the students’ genuine grievances, they are met with force and intimidation. This is not a solution; it only exacerbates the situation and fuels further unrest.” He emphasized the importance of dialogue and a transparent investigation into the allegations surrounding the NEET exam.
NEET Exam Controversy
The immediate trigger for the protests is the perceived unfairness in the NEET examination results. Students allege irregularities in the evaluation process and are demanding a re-evaluation or a thorough inquiry. The NEET exam is crucial for admission to medical colleges across India, and any perceived injustice carries significant weight for aspiring doctors in Kashmir.
Beyond the NEET issue, students are also raising concerns about the overall quality of education, lack of infrastructure in schools and colleges, and limited opportunities for higher learning in the region. Ruhullah has called for an impartial investigation into the NEET allegations, urging the authorities to involve independent experts and student representatives in the process. He also demanded the immediate release of any students who may have been detained during the protests. Local student leaders have echoed Ruhullah’s sentiments, accusing the government of ignoring their concerns and resorting to repressive tactics. They have vowed to continue their protests until their demands are met. The administration, however, maintains that it is committed to ensuring a fair and transparent education system and that the police were compelled to act to maintain law and order.
The situation remains tense, with authorities deploying additional security forces in and around educational institutions.
