Karur Stampede: CBI Summons TVK President Vijay Again

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has once again summoned Tamilaga Vaikoo Nayanar Kazhagam (TVK) president T. Velmurugan, commonly known as Vijay, in connection with the Karur stampede case. The agency has requested his presence for questioning on January 19th, marking a renewed push in the investigation into the tragic incident that occurred during a temple festival.

The stampede took place on January 14, 2024, during the annual chariot festival at the Mariamman Temple in Karur, Tamil Nadu. A large crowd had gathered to witness the event, and a chaotic rush ensued as devotees attempted to receive offerings from the chariot. At least 10 people lost their lives, and dozens more were injured in the ensuing mayhem. The incident sparked widespread grief and outrage, prompting the Tamil Nadu state government to hand over the investigation to the CBI.

Initial reports suggested a lack of adequate crowd control measures and poor planning contributed to the disaster. Eyewitness accounts described a sudden surge in the crowd, exacerbated by narrow pathways and insufficient barricades. The distribution of ‘prasad’ (sacred offering) directly from the chariot is believed to have been a key factor in triggering the stampede, as devotees jostled for position to receive it.

Previous CBI Investigation

Vijay was previously questioned by the CBI in connection with the case earlier this month. The nature of the previous questioning and the specific information sought by the agency have not been publicly disclosed. However, sources indicate that the CBI is exploring the possibility of negligence and potential violations of safety regulations by the temple authorities and organizers of the festival.

The TVK, a political party in Tamil Nadu, has been actively involved in organizing and participating in the Mariamman Temple festival for many years. Vijay’s role in the festival’s planning and execution is therefore of significant interest to the investigators. The CBI is likely to seek clarification on the arrangements made for crowd management, the number of attendees, and the procedures followed for the distribution of offerings.

The CBI’s continued investigation aims to determine the exact circumstances that led to the stampede and to identify those responsible for the tragedy. The agency is expected to examine all available evidence, including eyewitness testimonies, video footage, and documents related to the festival’s organization. The outcome of the investigation could lead to criminal charges against individuals or organizations found to be negligent or culpable.

The Tamil Nadu government has announced compensation for the families of the deceased and for those who sustained injuries in the stampede. Efforts are also underway to review and improve safety measures at major religious festivals across the state to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The Karur stampede serves as a stark reminder of the importance of prioritizing public safety and implementing effective crowd control strategies at large gatherings.

The upcoming questioning of Vijay is anticipated to provide further insights into the events leading up to the stampede and potentially shed light on any systemic failures that may have contributed to the disaster. The CBI is committed to a thorough and impartial investigation to ensure justice is served for the victims and their families.
