The Karnataka Health Department has issued a winter flu alert amid growing concerns over a potential surge in influenza cases across the state between January and March 2025. Health authorities have directed all districts to enhance surveillance and preparedness measures, ensuring adequate stocks of medications, testing kits, and hospital infrastructure to handle increased patient loads during the peak season.

Officials highlighted that winter conditions facilitate the spread of respiratory viruses, including influenza A (H1N1 and H3N2), influenza B, and other seasonal viruses. The advisory emphasizes heightened monitoring in vulnerable populations, such as young children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic health conditions. District health officers have been instructed to conduct regular reviews of isolation wards, oxygen supply, and critical care facilities.

Precautionary Measures

The state has advised citizens to adopt preventive practices, including frequent handwashing, wearing masks in crowded settings, avoiding close contact with symptomatic individuals, and maintaining respiratory hygiene. Health centres and primary healthcare facilities are being equipped with influenza testing capabilities, and rapid response teams are on standby to manage outbreaks in schools, colleges, and residential areas.

Karnataka’s health surveillance system will track trends in influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) cases, with data shared weekly to identify emerging hotspots. Private hospitals and clinics have been asked to report cases promptly to the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) for real-time monitoring.

Vaccination and Treatment

Authorities recommend seasonal influenza vaccination for high-risk groups to reduce severe outcomes. Antiviral medications will be made available through designated healthcare centres, and guidelines for clinical management have been disseminated to medical professionals. Hospitals are instructed to reserve beds for severe cases and ensure adequate staffing during the anticipated surge.

The Health Department has collaborated with municipal corporations and rural local bodies to conduct public awareness campaigns, focusing on early symptom recognition and appropriate healthcare-seeking behaviour. Residents experiencing fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, or breathing difficulties are urged to consult doctors promptly.

Karnataka’s move aligns with national preparedness efforts as several Indian states witness fluctuations in respiratory illnesses during winter. The state government assures the public that essential supplies, including oxygen and emergency medicines, remain sufficient to meet potential demand.
