England batter Joe Root is confident his team can chase down the remaining 35 runs on Day 5 to clinch the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy and deny India a series draw.
Speaking after play on Sunday, Root, who scored a vital century—his third in the series—said the belief in the England dressing room remains strong. “I’d like to think we have what we need to get across the line tomorrow,” he told reporters. “It’s been one hell of a series, one hell of a journey… and we’re in for a great day tomorrow.”
The fifth Test has swung both ways throughout, setting up a dramatic finale at The Oval. England require just 35 more runs with several wickets in hand, and Root believes the lower order is capable of finishing the job.
Light and Rain Disrupt Play
Play was halted during the final session due to poor light, and later abandoned altogether after rain hit the venue. Both teams, and the fans, were visibly frustrated—especially with India having just taken two quick wickets post-tea. The crowd expressed their disappointment as umpires called off play nearly an hour before the scheduled close.
Despite the interruption, Root and India’s assistant coach Morne Morkel accepted the decision. “You just sit and wait and do what you’re told,” Root said. “We come back tomorrow, use the heavy roller again, and it’s a fresh chance.”
Morkel echoed the sentiment, acknowledging the tough conditions and praising the ground staff for their efforts in keeping the game on track through the week.
Heavy Roller Could Aid England’s Chase
The use of the heavy roller could play a key role on Day 5. England will be allowed to use it first thing in the morning—just as they did on Sunday—and Root believes it has been an advantage throughout the series.
“It has made an impact so far throughout this game,” he noted. “Hopefully, it works in our favor in flattening things out again.”
With rain cleared from the forecast and England needing just 35 more runs, all eyes will be on The Oval for what promises to be a thrilling end to a fiercely contested five-Test series.
