Srinagar, Kashmir – A fresh western disturbance is poised to impact Jammu and Kashmir, bringing with it the likelihood of widespread rain and snow across the region. The meteorological department has issued warnings and forecasts indicating that the inclement weather will begin to intensify from late Wednesday night and continue through Thursday and Friday.
The approaching system is expected to affect higher reaches with moderate to heavy snowfall, potentially disrupting surface transportation, including the Srinagar-Jammu national highway. Lower altitude areas are predicted to receive moderate rainfall, which could lead to temporary waterlogging in some urban centers.
According to officials, the western disturbance has already started approaching the western Himalayas and its effects will be felt across J&K. The intensity of the precipitation is expected to be higher in areas like Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg, popular tourist destinations known for their winter landscapes.
“We are expecting a significant change in weather from tonight. Widespread rain and snow are likely in most parts of J&K,” stated an official from the Meteorological Department. “The peak intensity will be on Thursday and Friday. We advise people to take necessary precautions and avoid venturing into avalanche-prone areas.”
Authorities are on alert and have advised local disaster management teams to remain prepared to respond to any emergencies that may arise due to the adverse weather conditions. The power development department has also been put on notice to ensure minimal disruptions to electricity supply.
The snowfall is anticipated to be beneficial for the upcoming tourist season, enhancing the appeal of the region’s winter attractions. However, it also poses challenges for maintaining essential services and ensuring the safety of residents and travelers.
Impact on Transportation
The Srinagar-Jammu highway, a crucial lifeline for the Kashmir valley, is likely to be affected by snowfall and potential landslides. Traffic police have advised commuters to check the road status before embarking on their journeys. Flights to and from Srinagar airport could also face disruptions due to low visibility and adverse weather conditions.
Local authorities are working to clear snow from major roads and ensure that essential supplies are maintained. However, the challenging terrain and the expected intensity of the snowfall may hinder these efforts.
The weather department has urged people to stay indoors as much as possible during the peak of the disturbance and to avoid unnecessary travel. They have also advised farmers to take steps to protect their crops from the potential damage caused by heavy rainfall and snowfall. The current weather conditions are a stark reminder of the region’s vulnerability to extreme weather events, particularly during the winter months.
The administration is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as the weather evolves. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels and to heed the advice of the authorities. The next few days are expected to be particularly challenging, and preparedness is key to mitigating the risks associated with the approaching western disturbance.
