Jio Discontinues 1GB/Day Plan, Pushes Users to Higher Data Packs

Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio has discontinued its entry-level 1GB per day prepaid plans, effectively making the 1.5GB/day plan the new base option for users.

The change is already visible on Jio’s official website, where ₹249 plans for 28 days with 1GB/day data are no longer listed. Instead, users now start with 1.5GB/day packs, pushing them toward slightly higher-priced plans with more data.

Subscriber Growth Continues

Despite the move, Jio continued to lead the telecom market in June. According to TRAI data:

  • Jio added 1.9 million net subscribers.
  • Airtel gained 763,482 users.
  • Vodafone Idea (Vi) lost 217,816 subscribers.
  • BSNL saw a decline of 305,766 users.

This brought India’s total wireless user base to 1.163 billion.

Active User Base

  • Jio: 464.46 million active users (97.37% of total).
  • Airtel: 388.04 million active users (99.24% of total).
  • Vi: 172.65 million active users (84.54%).
  • BSNL: 57.10 million active users (63.12%).

With the highest number of active subscribers, Jio continues to maintain its dominance, even as smaller players struggle to retain users.

What It Means for Customers

The discontinuation of 1GB/day plans means Jio users will now have to pay more upfront for higher data quotas, starting from 1.5GB/day. Analysts say this move could increase average revenue per user (ARPU) for Jio while still keeping entry-level pricing competitive compared to rivals.
