Inter-State Meet: Rohit Yadav Wins Javelin Gold, Keeps World Championships Hopes Alive

Chennai: The Inter-State Athletics Meet concluded on Sunday with crucial performances in javelin, long jump, and steeplechase as athletes chased final qualification spots for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

Rohit Yadav Shines in Javelin

Uttar Pradesh’s Rohit Yadav delivered a personal best throw of 83.65m to clinch gold in the men’s javelin. While short of the direct entry standard of 85.50m, the performance is expected to keep him inside the top-36 of the ‘Road to Tokyo’ rankings, giving him a strong chance of securing a place at the Worlds.

Yadav opened with 77.31m and improved with each attempt, with his third throw proving decisive. “I was aiming for the automatic mark, but this keeps my dream alive,” he said after the win.

Sreeshankar Murali Tops Long Jump

Kerala’s Sreeshankar Murali jumped 8.06m to win the men’s long jump. However, his chances of making it to Tokyo remain slim, as he is likely to fall just outside the cut-off in the rankings.

Returning from injury earlier this season, the 26-year-old admitted qualification may be beyond reach this year:
“This season was meant to be a restart for me. Last year, I wasn’t even sure if I’d compete again, so I’ll take this positively. My focus is on preparing for next year’s Commonwealth and Asian Games,” he said.

Ankita Dhyani Wins Steeplechase

In the women’s 3000m steeplechase, Ankita Dhyani of Uttarakhand clocked 9:44.83 to finish first. Currently ranked 35th, she remains on the edge of qualification with only the top-36 athletes eligible for the Worlds.

Key Takeaway

The Inter-State meet highlighted India’s mixed fortunes on the road to the World Championships. While Rohit Yadav’s throw keeps his campaign alive, both Sreeshankar and Ankita will have to wait anxiously for the final rankings to know their fate.
