China’s military parade on September 3, 2025, marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. The event showcased the nation’s growing military power, featuring a range of advanced weaponry and technology, including hypersonic missiles, aerial drones, and underwater vehicles.

More than 20 world leaders, including Russia’s Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un, attended the ceremony in Beijing, underscoring its international significance. The 90-minute event offered a glimpse into China’s rapidly advancing military capabilities, with displays of cutting-edge technologies designed for both land and sea combat.

Key Highlights from the Parade

1. Hypersonic Missiles and Fighter Jets
   Among the most striking displays were China’s hypersonic missiles, capable of reaching speeds faster than Mach 5, making them difficult to intercept. The parade also featured advanced fighter jets, including China’s fifth-generation combat planes, the J-20, J-20A, and J-35A, marking their first appearance on active duty.
2. Underwater and Aerial Drones
   One of the highlights was the unveiling of new drones capable of both underwater and aerial operations. These drones, some designed for reconnaissance, are believed to also have strike capabilities. The parade also introduced unmanned helicopters, designed to launch from naval ships, broadening China’s capabilities in remote combat scenarios.
3. Anti-Drone and Laser Systems
   The military showcased its anti-drone technology, including missile guns and high-energy laser systems. These systems are designed to disrupt and destroy enemy drones, a growing threat in modern warfare.
4. Unmanned Underwater Vehicles
   China presented two massive unmanned underwater vehicles, the AJX002 and HSU100, with the AJX002 reportedly measuring 65 feet long. These vehicles are believed to be designed for surveillance and reconnaissance missions, though the HSU100 is suspected to have a more specialized role, such as laying mines underwater.
5. Ballistic Missiles
   A significant portion of the parade was dedicated to displaying China’s ballistic missile capabilities. The DF-5C intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) was featured as part of the “Dongfeng” missile series, capable of striking anywhere on Earth. Additionally, air-launched and sea-launched nuclear-capable missiles, like the JL-1 and JL-3, were also shown.
6. Autonomous Combat Systems
   In a nod to future warfare, China showcased robotic systems including four-legged “robot wolves” designed for potential battlefield roles. These robots, resembling dogs, could replace human soldiers in certain military operations.
