India’s Retail Inflation Hits 8-Year Low of 1.6% in July

India’s retail inflation fell to its lowest level in eight years in July, dropping to 1.6%, driven by lower food prices and a favorable base effect. This marks the ninth consecutive month of easing inflation, offering relief to consumers and the economy amid global trade tensions.

According to data released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) on Tuesday, the consumer price index (CPI) showed a significant decline from 2.1% in June and 3.6% in July 2024. This is the first time in eight years that the inflation rate has fallen below 2%.

Key Drivers of the Drop:
The major contributor to the slowdown was a 1.8% decrease in food inflation, compared to a 1% decline in June. The sharp drop in both overall retail inflation and food inflation was primarily driven by the favorable base effect and reductions in the prices of various food items, including pulses, vegetables, cereals, eggs, sugar, and even transport and communication costs.

Food Inflation at its Lowest Since 2019:
Food inflation in July was the lowest recorded since January 2019, at -1.8%, following a decline of 75 basis points from June. Rural inflation also decreased to 1.2%, while urban inflation stood at 2.1%.

Soumya Kanti Ghosh, the group chief economic adviser at SBI, noted that core inflation (excluding gold) also slowed significantly to 3.9%, marking its first drop below 4% in six months. The core inflation, excluding gold, fell even further to 2.96%, nearly 100 basis points lower than the headline CPI.

Vegetable and Pulses Prices See Significant Decline:
Vegetable inflation fell by 20.7%, while prices for pulses and related products decreased by 13.8%. Food and beverages inflation also fell by 0.8% during the month.

Outlook and RBI’s Response:
Experts predict that the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is likely to maintain a cautious stance on interest rates, monitoring the potential economic impact of US tariffs. The central bank is expected to remain in a wait-and-watch mode and may adjust rates depending on how these global factors unfold.
