A video showing a coach attendant from the Indian Railways throwing a bag of garbage from a moving train has gone viral, prompting swift disciplinary action from railway authorities. The incident, which took place on the Sealdah-Ajmer Express, sparked public outrage online and renewed discussions about cleanliness and accountability within the railway system.
Incident Details
The viral clip, shared by Instagram user Abhishek Singh, captured the shocking moment when an onboard attendant was seen tossing a trash bag onto the railway tracks. According to Singh, the incident occurred on November 4, 2025, while he was travelling from Kanpur to Jaipur aboard train number 12987, Sealdah-Ajmer Express.
In his caption, Singh explained that he confronted the attendant about the act, but the worker allegedly responded dismissively, saying, “Should I take it home?” The video quickly gained traction on social media, drawing sharp criticism from viewers who questioned the lack of hygiene awareness and responsibility among railway staff.
“I tried to make him understand that what he did was wrong, but he kept arguing and refused to accept his mistake,” Singh wrote.
Railways Responds
The North Western Railway took immediate note of the video and confirmed that action had been taken against the attendant, identified as Sanjay Singh. In an official statement posted in response to the viral clip, the department confirmed that the employee had been removed from service, and the contractor responsible for the onboard housekeeping team had been fined.
“Your complaint regarding garbage being thrown from train no. 12987 has been viewed seriously. Contractual staff Sh. Sanjay Singh has been removed with immediate effect, and strict penalty has been imposed on the contractual firm,” the comment read.
The Railways also announced the launch of a counselling drive to educate Onboard Housekeeping Service (OBHS) staff on proper waste disposal practices. The statement added that garbage should only be disposed of at designated stations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“We regret the inconvenience caused and assure continuous efforts to improve passenger services,” the Railways added.
Public Reaction
The video has sparked widespread discussion about civic responsibility and the need for stronger waste management enforcement on trains. Many social media users praised Abhishek Singh for bringing the issue to light.
One user wrote, “I just wonder why no one stopped him. Why are we always silent observers to such acts?”
Another commented, “Look at his expression — he seems proud of what he’s done. This is exactly why such behaviour continues.”
Others lauded Singh’s vigilance, saying, “Hats off to you, brother, for raising your voice against this.”
Cleanliness Drive Reminder
The incident underscores the ongoing challenge Indian Railways faces in maintaining cleanliness on its vast network. Despite multiple campaigns such as Swachh Rail, Swachh Bharat, isolated cases like these highlight the need for stricter monitoring and behavioural change among both staff and passengers.
