A WhatsApp exchange between an Indian employee and their manager has gone viral after the manager denied sick leave for a severe headache. The conversation, widely shared on Reddit’s r/IndianWorkplace subreddit, has triggered a nationwide debate on workplace culture, employee rights, and the lack of managerial empathy.
The Viral Chat
The incident began when the employee requested leave due to a persistent headache. The manager, however, dismissed the request with a blunt reply:
“Medicine leke ajao, koi nahi, thik ho jyga, headache hi hai (Take medicine and come, it’s just a headache).”
The employee, trying to comply, replied: “Dolo tha vo leke dekhta hu (I’ll take Dolo and see).” But when the pain continued, they insisted they could not make it to work.
The manager doubled down:
“Med lo na hero. Headache me chhutti thodi na milti hai. Bhai kesi baate kar rahe ho. School me nahi hai (Take medicine, you don’t get a leave for a headache. This isn’t school).”
Even after the employee explained they had already taken medicine, the manager insisted: “Ab aap company me ho. Thoda rest kar lo bhale hi, but office aao (You’re part of the company now. Take some rest if needed, but come to the office).” Feeling pressured, the employee replied reluctantly: “Try karta hu (I’ll try).”
Social Media Reaction
The screenshots, posted with the caption “How does one even work with a headache??”, went viral within hours. Thousands of users criticized the manager’s insensitivity.
One Redditor wrote: “Headache me nahi milti to kya heart attack aane ka wait karna padega? This hero-hero talk is getting on my nerves!”
Others suggested practical alternatives: “Next time se bolo unwell (Next time, just say unwell).”
Employees Share Their Experiences
The viral post encouraged many to share their own workplace struggles. One user said:
“I never used to take leave. One day I got viral fever, and my manager still asked me to work half-day. I left that job in four months. Now I take sick leave whenever I need it — even once a month just to rest.”
Another commented: “I don’t ask for leave anymore. I just take it and inform. If needed, I adjust my work later.”
A Larger Work Culture Issue
The conversation has reignited concerns about toxic workplace practices in India. Critics argue that employees are often forced to prioritize productivity over health, while managers dismiss legitimate health concerns as trivial.
Observers compared this with global work cultures, noting that in many Western countries, even minor ailments are taken seriously, and sick leave is granted without resistance. In contrast, Indian workplaces often expect employees to “push through” illness.
A Call for Empathy
While a handful of people defended the manager’s tough stance, the overwhelming reaction highlighted the need for empathy. As one user summed up:
“It seems that for some, being a manager also means forgetting empathy.”
