Indian-American Amit Kshatriya Appointed NASA’s New Associate Administrator

Amit Kshatriya, an Indian-American engineer with over two decades of experience at NASA, has been appointed as the new Associate Administrator at NASA. He will oversee the agency’s mission control operations and serve as a senior advisor to Acting NASA Administrator, Sean P. Duffy. Kshatriya takes on the highest civil service role at NASA, with significant responsibility for leading the agency’s strategic exploration efforts, including the Moon to Mars Program.

Kshatriya, a 20-year veteran of NASA, was previously the deputy in charge of the Moon to Mars Programme within the Exploration Systems Development Mission Directorate (ESDMD). In his new role, Kshatriya will supervise NASA’s 10 center directors and lead the mission directorate associate administrators at NASA’s headquarters in Washington. His new position makes him the agency’s Chief Operating Officer, driving the organization’s ambitious goals, including NASA’s planned return to the Moon under the Artemis program.

Born in Wisconsin to Indian immigrant parents, Kshatriya earned his education at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and the University of Texas at Austin. He is one of only about 100 people in history to serve as a mission control flight director. His distinguished career includes receiving the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal for his role as the lead flight director during the 50th expedition to the International Space Station. Kshatriya was also honored with the Silver Snoopy Award, an accolade given by astronauts for outstanding performance in contributing to flight safety.

In his new role, Kshatriya will continue to drive NASA’s leadership in space exploration and expand partnerships with the commercial space sector, a key focus of the current administration. The Trump administration views the growing commercial space industry as a critical component of the U.S. economy and space exploration strategy, particularly in its competition with China for leadership in space.

Acting NASA Administrator, Sean P. Duffy, praised Kshatriya’s extensive experience and leadership, highlighting his commitment to advancing American space exploration. Duffy emphasized that Kshatriya’s promotion places the Artemis program at the center of NASA’s future goals, reinforcing the U.S. commitment to returning astronauts to the Moon and preparing for the eventual journey to Mars.

Kshatriya’s father, an engineer, and his mother, a chemist—both Indian immigrants—instilled in him a deep appreciation for education, particularly in science and math, which helped shape his career in space exploration.

Kshatriya and his wife have three children, and he continues to inspire future generations in the field of space exploration.
