India’s U23 football team dominated Brunei 6-0 in the AFC U23 Asian Cup Qualifiers, securing a commanding victory at the Suheim Bin Hamad Stadium in Doha on Tuesday. The match, which featured a hat-trick from Vibin Mohanan, helped the Blue Colts finish their group campaign with six points. However, their qualification still hinges on the results of other matches.
Vibin Mohanan Stars with a Hat-Trick
The young Indian team wasted no time asserting their dominance on the field. Vibin Mohanan was the star, scoring a quickfire hat-trick in the 5th, 7th, and 62nd minutes. His opening goal came from a cutback by Muhammed Suhail, followed by a looping strike that left the Brunei goalkeeper helpless. A brilliant one-two between Ayush Chhetri and Sreekuttan MS led to the third goal before Vibin completed his hat-trick with a curling free-kick.
Mohammed Aimen also contributed with two long-range goals, one in the 87th minute and another in stoppage time (90+7ā), completing the emphatic 6-0 win.
Qualification Hopes Still Dependent on Other Results
Indiaās victory left them with six points, having previously beaten Bahrain 2-0 but narrowly losing to hosts Qatar 1-2. While the teamās performance was impressive, their qualification for the next stage depends on the outcome of the Bahrain-Qatar match at the Abdullah bin Khalifa Stadium. If Qatar wins or holds Bahrain, India will need a UAE victory by four or more goals over Iran to advance as one of the best runners-up.
Security Concerns Amid Explosions in Doha
Despite the teamās strong performance, celebrations in Doha were overshadowed by security concerns. Several explosions were reported across the Qatari capital, with smoke rising from the Katara district. Israeli media reported that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Israeli Security Agency (ISA) targeted senior Hamas leaders allegedly responsible for orchestrating attacks against Israel, including the deadly October 7 strikes.
The IDF confirmed the use of “precise munitions” to minimize civilian casualties, and Israeli Prime Minister took full responsibility for the operation. U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly approved the mission, according to Israeli Channel 12.
Focus on the Pitch Despite Tensions
Amid the tense security situation, Indiaās U23 team remained focused on their game, showcasing clinical finishing and controlled possession throughout the match. Coach Moosa and the squad will now await the Bahrain-Qatar result, with hopes of advancing to the next stage.
