New Delhi – India has announced the successful test-firing of its Agni-5 intermediate-range ballistic missile, a weapon system capable of carrying a nuclear warhead and reaching targets deep inside China.
The missile was launched from the Odisha coast on Wednesday, with officials confirming that the test “validated all operational and technical parameters.” The trial is seen as a key step in strengthening India’s long-range strategic deterrence.
Strategic Context
The Agni-5 is part of India’s indigenously developed missile arsenal, designed to enhance its defence posture against both China and Pakistan. Relations with Beijing remain tense following the deadly 2020 border clash in Ladakh, even as the two countries attempt to repair ties through diplomatic engagements.
India is also a member of the Quad security grouping with the US, Japan, and Australia, often viewed as a counterbalance to China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific.
Regional Tensions
Alongside tensions with China, India continues to face challenges with Pakistan, which also possesses nuclear weapons. Earlier this year, the two nations came close to conflict after militants killed 26 people in Indian-administered Kashmir—a strike New Delhi blamed on Islamabad, which denied involvement.
On the diplomatic front, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to travel to China later this month to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, marking his first visit there since 2018. The planned trip follows his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at a Russia summit last year.
Wider Geopolitical Backdrop
The test comes at a time of global turbulence marked by trade disputes and shifting alliances. Ties between New Delhi and Washington have recently been strained over US demands that India cut purchases of Russian oil. The US has warned of doubling tariffs on Indian imports to 50% by August 27 if New Delhi does not comply.
Despite these pressures, the Agni-5 trial underlines India’s determination to advance its defence capabilities while navigating a complex regional and global landscape.
