New Delhi has formally requested Islamabad to prevent repeated drone incursions along the Line of Control (LoC), according to statements made by Indian Army Chief General Manoj Pande. The demand comes amidst escalating concerns over the increasing use of drones for cross-border smuggling and potential terrorist activities.
General Pande, speaking to reporters, emphasized that India has conveyed its concerns to Pakistan through established military-to-military channels. He stated that these drone intrusions represent a significant security challenge and require immediate attention from Pakistani authorities. The Indian side has provided specific details regarding the flight paths and operational patterns of the drones observed, urging Pakistan to investigate and take corrective measures.
“We have been taking up the issue of drone intrusions with Pakistan. We have shared details of these incidents with them and have asked them to investigate and take appropriate action,” General Pande said. He further added that the Indian Army is actively developing and deploying counter-drone technologies to mitigate the threat, including electronic warfare systems and directed energy weapons.
Increased Drone Activity
Recent months have witnessed a noticeable surge in drone activity along the India-Pakistan border, particularly in the Jammu and Kashmir region. Security forces have intercepted numerous drones carrying arms, ammunition, and narcotics. While some drones have been shot down, many others have successfully evaded detection, raising concerns about the vulnerability of the border.
Intelligence sources suggest that Pakistan-based terrorist groups are increasingly utilizing drones to smuggle weapons and explosives into Indian territory. The use of drones allows them to bypass traditional security measures and operate with a degree of anonymity. This has prompted Indian security agencies to enhance surveillance and strengthen counter-infiltration grids.
The Indian Army is also collaborating with other security agencies, such as the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Intelligence Bureau, to share information and coordinate efforts to counter the drone threat. Joint patrols and enhanced surveillance are being conducted along the border to detect and neutralize any potential threats.
“We are constantly reviewing and upgrading our counter-drone capabilities to stay ahead of the evolving threat,” General Pande affirmed. He highlighted the importance of technological innovation and the need for a multi-layered approach to address the challenge. This includes strengthening border infrastructure, deploying advanced surveillance equipment, and training personnel in counter-drone operations.
The issue of drone intrusions is expected to be a key topic of discussion during future meetings between Indian and Pakistani military officials. However, given the strained relations between the two countries, a breakthrough in resolving the issue remains uncertain. India continues to emphasize the need for Pakistan to fulfill its international obligations and prevent its territory from being used for cross-border terrorism and illegal activities.
