NITI Aayog is spearheading a mission to achieve self-sufficiency in pulse production in India by 2030, with a projected surplus by 2047. This ambitious goal necessitates significant advancements in agricultural technology and policy, particularly concerning seed development and distribution.
According to news agency PTI, a key figure in the initiative, Chaturvedi, emphasized the critical role of pulses in the Indian diet, highlighting their unique characteristics compared to other food commodities. He noted that pulses possess very little elasticity and replaceability, unlike edible oils, making domestic production even more vital for food security and affordability.
A core component of the strategy involves achieving breakthroughs in high-yield pulse varieties. Chaturvedi stressed the importance of improved seed replacement rates, indicating a need to modernize the agricultural practices employed by Indian farmers. He lamented the absence of hybrid varieties in pulse cultivation, stating that the development of such hybrids would dramatically increase productivity on a large scale. This reflects a desire to leverage cutting-edge genetic research to enhance yields and resilience of pulse crops.
ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research) Director General ML Jat echoed the sentiment for strengthening local seed systems. He further advocated for intensified research efforts focusing on weed management and genomic breeding. Effective weed control is essential for maximizing crop yields, while genomic breeding holds the potential to create pulse varieties that are more resistant to pests, diseases, and adverse environmental conditions.
