India will mark its 79th Independence Day on Friday, August 15, 2025, commemorating the nation’s liberation from over 200 years of British colonial rule in 1947.
Every year, the day—also known as Swatantrata Diwas—is celebrated across the country with flag-hoisting ceremonies, parades, and cultural programmes in schools, government offices, and public spaces.
Why 79th, Not 78th?
The confusion over whether this year marks the 78th or 79th Independence Day arises from a common counting error. Many people subtract 1947 from 2025 and get 78, forgetting to count August 15, 1947—the first Independence Day—as Year One. Following this method, 2025 becomes the 79th celebration of India’s freedom.
Theme for Independence Day 2025
The Government of India has not yet announced the official theme for this year’s celebrations. Traditionally, themes highlight unity, patriotism, social progress, and the sacrifices of freedom fighters. This year’s theme is expected to reflect similar values while focusing on national development and collective responsibility.
Significance and Celebrations
Independence Day serves as a reminder of the struggles and sacrifices made by India’s freedom fighters, inspiring citizens to uphold democratic values and contribute to the nation’s progress.
The official programme in Delhi will begin at the Red Fort with a Guard of Honour presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi by the Armed Forces and Delhi Police. The Prime Minister will then unfurl the national flag, followed by the National Anthem and a 21-gun salute. As part of the ceremony, Indian Air Force helicopters will shower flower petals over the venue, and the Prime Minister will deliver his annual Independence Day address.
Across the country, state capitals, schools, and communities will organise patriotic events, cultural performances, and public gatherings to mark the day.
