How Lionel Messi Was Convinced to Visit India: Ronaldinho, Emi Martinez, and a Durga Puja Statue

Kolkata, August 16: Football legend Lionel Messi is set to return to India this winter for a four-city exhibition tour, marking one of the biggest sporting events in the country’s history. But how was the Argentinian superstar persuaded to take on such a demanding trip at this stage of his career?

The answer lies in a mix of friends’ recommendations, nostalgia, and Kolkata’s football passion.

Ronaldinho and Emi Martinez Opened the Door

Kolkata-based sports promoter Satadru Dutta, who is bringing Messi to India, revealed that the idea took shape when he previously hosted Emiliano Martinez and Ronaldinho for similar events in India last year.

“The football world is a small circle. When I got Emi Martinez and Ronaldinho to Kolkata, I told them that I am trying to bring Messi to India and your review will matter,” Dutta told The Indian Express.

Both stars reportedly gave glowing feedback to Messi and his team, convincing him that India was worth a visit.

Nostalgia and a Durga Puja Statue

Messi first played in India back in 2011, leading Argentina against Venezuela in a friendly in Kolkata. To tap into that memory, Dutta showed him clips from the match, which happened to be the first time Messi captained Argentina.

Adding to the charm, Messi was also shown a photo of a Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata featuring his statue, a testament to the city’s football obsession.

“I just asked him if it would be possible over the next one or two years, and he said, ‘I love the idea’,” Dutta recalled.

Messi’s Four-City India Tour

Messi will begin his tour in Kolkata, before heading to Ahmedabad, New Delhi, and Mumbai. The multi-city format, Dutta explained, was essential to make the project financially viable.

During the visit, Messi is expected to:

  • Attend multiple fan and cultural events
  • Meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi
  • Play in seven-a-side exhibition matches featuring Indian sports icons, Bollywood stars, and possibly even try cricket with modern Indian cricketers.

For Indian fans, Messi’s arrival is more than just an exhibition—it’s a chance to see the football icon up close, in a country where his popularity rivals cricketing greats.
