Hemant Soren Pays Tearful Tribute: “My Father Was a Protective Shade for Jharkhand, Tribals”

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren paid an emotional tribute to his father and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder, Shibu Soren, who passed away on Monday morning at the age of 81.

Describing his father as a “protective shade” for both Jharkhand and its tribal communities, Hemant Soren said his father’s legacy will remain deeply rooted in the state’s history and struggle for tribal rights.

“He was like a protective shade for Jharkhand and the tribals. That shade has left us today,” Hemant said while holding back tears, as party workers around him chanted slogans in honor of the late leader. “We will always remember him. His legacy will live on.”

Shibu Soren, often referred to as ‘Dishom Guruji’ by his followers, had been undergoing treatment for kidney-related complications at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi since June 19. He breathed his last at 8:56 a.m., according to Dr. A.K. Bhalla, the senior nephrologist overseeing his treatment.

Announcing the news on social media, Hemant Soren wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Respected Dishom Guruji has left us all… I have become ‘shunya’ (zero) today.”

The former Chief Minister’s mortal remains were transported to Ranchi from Delhi for the final rites.

Recalling his father’s final days, Hemant said, “He was ailing. There were times he showed improvement and times when things worsened. But he fought till the very end. We have no words to express our loss. A great man has left us.”

Shibu Soren was not only the founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha but also a central figure in the movement for the creation of Jharkhand. Over nearly four decades, he emerged as a symbol of tribal identity, social justice, and grassroots political leadership in the region.

In a mark of respect, the Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day following news of his passing.
