Goa Nightclub Fire Claims 25 Lives; Probe Ordered Into Safety Violations

A major fire at the popular Birch By Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora, Goa, killed at least 25 people and left over 50 injured shortly after midnight on Sunday. Early investigations suggest that a cylinder explosion triggered the blaze, trapping staff and visitors inside the smoke-filled basement.

What Happened

According to officials, nearly 100 people were on the dance floor when the fire erupted. In the rush to escape, several ran toward the kitchen area in the basement, where many became trapped along with staff members.
Three victims died from burn injuries, while the others succumbed to suffocation as dense smoke filled the enclosed spaces.

Emergency services received the first distress call at 12:04 am. Firefighters, police personnel and medical teams worked through the night to control the fire, recover bodies and transport the injured to hospitals.

Investigation and Legal Action

Goa Police have filed an FIR against the nightclub owner, manager and the event organiser. Authorities believe that the establishment did not comply with essential fire safety norms.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the site and described the incident as a heartbreaking moment for the state. He confirmed that a detailed inquiry has been ordered and assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible for operating without the required safety measures.

Reactions From Leaders

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed shock and grief, announcing financial aid of ₹2 lakh for families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured through the PMNRF.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also extended condolences, noting that local authorities were actively carrying out rescue and relief operations.

President Droupadi Murmu termed the tragedy “deeply paining,” offering sympathies to the affected families.

Concerns Over Safety Compliance

Residents in the area reported a loud explosion before the structure caught fire. North Goa MLA Michael Lobo highlighted the need for an immediate safety audit of all nightlife venues across the state, stressing the importance of strict oversight in such establishments.

As the investigation continues, officials say the priority is to identify lapses in fire safety and determine responsibility for one of Goa’s worst nightclub disasters.
