Former U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday called for an immediate ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand amid escalating border clashes that have reportedly left at least 33 people dead. Trump, currently visiting Scotland, shared on his Truth Social platform that he has spoken with both Cambodian Prime Minister and Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister in an attempt to mediate peace.
“Thailand, like Cambodia, wants to have an immediate ceasefire and peace,” Trump wrote. “I have just spoken to both leaders, and I believe peace and prosperity are within reach. We will soon see!”
The ongoing conflict, now in its third day, was sparked by long-standing disputes over ancient temple sites. The fighting has spread across remote border regions, including coastal areas near the Gulf of Thailand, about 250 kilometers southwest of the main conflict zone. These regions, largely agrarian and home to rubber and rice farmers, have now become flashpoints for military activity.
In his remarks, Trump drew a controversial comparison to the India-Pakistan conflict, stating:
“I am trying to simplify a complex situation! Many people are being killed in this war, but it very much reminds me of the conflict between Pakistan and India, which was brought to a successful halt.”
Trump also warned that trade negotiations with either Cambodia or Thailand would not proceed unless hostilities cease.
This border clash adds to rising regional tensions and is being closely watched by international observers. The U.S. State Department has not issued an official statement on Trump’s personal involvement.
