The first Made-in-India semiconductor chip is set to be produced soon, marking a major milestone in India’s ambition to build a self-reliant electronics supply chain. Union Minister for IT and Electronics, Ashwini Vaishnaw, made the announcement, highlighting the country’s progress under the Semiconductor Mission.
During the inauguration of the Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility at CG Semi Pvt. Ltd. in Sanand, Gujarat, Vaishnaw confirmed that a pilot line for semiconductor production has been set up, and the first chip will soon be dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“This is a major milestone in our country’s semiconductor journey,” Vaishnaw said, emphasizing the importance of the development for India’s growing electronics industry.
CG Power and Industrial Solutions Ltd., in partnership with Renesas Electronics America Inc. and Stars Microelectronics (Thailand), has established its first OSAT unit in Sanand, with a total investment of ₹7,600 crore. Vaishnaw added that other semiconductor projects in India are progressing rapidly.
He mentioned his visits to the Micron plant and the Kaynes plant, both of which are under construction at a good pace. The minister also referred to the Tata Electronics semiconductor fab being set up in Dholera, Gujarat, as another sign of the country’s semiconductor manufacturing growth.
The government has approved a total of 10 semiconductor projects across six states, with investments totaling ₹1.6 lakh crore. These projects are expected to strengthen India’s position in the global semiconductor supply chain.
Vaishnaw expressed his satisfaction with the pace of progress, saying, “This is a dream being fulfilled,” and added that India’s semiconductor production capacity will eventually reach seven crore chips per day.
Earlier this year, the government approved the first semiconductor unit in Sanand, followed by three more approvals in February 2024. Four more semiconductor projects were approved in August, bringing the total investment to ₹1.5 lakh crore.
