Elon Musk’s AI company xAI has launched Grokipedia, an AI-generated encyclopedia designed to rival Wikipedia, which Musk has frequently criticized for what he calls “editorial bias.” The tech billionaire announced the launch of “Grokipedia.com version 0.1” on X (formerly Twitter), describing it as “better than Wikipedia” even in its early stage.
Musk said the aim of Grokipedia — and of its AI engine Grok — is to deliver “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.” The new platform uses AI to curate and verify facts rather than relying on human editors. However, early users noticed that some entries are directly adapted from Wikipedia, featuring a disclaimer that reads: “The content is adapted from Wikipedia, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 License.”
This overlap has sparked discussion online, especially after Musk himself acknowledged earlier this month that Grokipedia uses Wikipedia pages, adding that the issue would be resolved “by the end of the year.”
How Grokipedia Differs from Wikipedia
- AI-driven vs. human-edited: Grokipedia’s content is generated or reviewed by the Grok AI model, while Wikipedia’s articles are maintained by volunteer editors.
- Transparency: Wikipedia offers open editing and visible revision histories, whereas Grokipedia currently limits user edits and does not fully disclose content changes.
- Ownership: Wikipedia operates as a non-profit, community-driven project. Grokipedia, on the other hand, is part of Musk’s for-profit AI ecosystem.
- Scale: Wikipedia hosts millions of multilingual articles; Grokipedia, still in version 0.1, reportedly has fewer than a million entries.
In response to Grokipedia’s launch, the Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia, emphasized that its platform remains “human-created knowledge built through open collaboration and consensus.” The foundation also noted that AI platforms, including Grokipedia, depend on Wikipedia’s freely available content to function.
