The re-release of Raanjhanaa with an AI-modified climax has stirred both emotion and controversy—and now, lead actor Dhanush has weighed in with a strong statement that has the internet deeply divided.
Originally released in 2013, Raanjhanaa left a lasting impact with its heartbreaking ending, where Dhanush’s character Kundan dies—a moment many fans considered the soul of the film. But 12 years later, a re-released version has altered that emotional arc using AI: in the new climax, Kundan survives. The change has prompted mixed reactions from audiences and a sharp response from Dhanush himself.
Dhanush’s Official Statement
In a public statement, the actor expressed his disappointment:
“The re-release of Raanjhanaa with an AI-altered climax has completely disturbed me. This alternate ending has stripped the film of its very soul, and the concerned parties went ahead with it despite my clear objection.”
He went on to criticize the broader use of artificial intelligence in creative content:
“The use of AI to alter films or content is a deeply concerning precedent for both art and artists. It threatens the integrity of storytelling and the legacy of cinema. I sincerely hope that stricter regulations are put in place to prevent such practices in the future.”
Director Aanand L. Rai has also previously voiced concerns over the AI modification, joining Dhanush in opposing this creative revision.
Internet Reacts: Support and Backlash
Dhanush’s statement triggered a wide spectrum of reactions on social media. Many fans backed him, agreeing that the AI-edited ending undermines the emotional weight of the original story.
One fan wrote:
“This is not the film I committed to 12 years ago.” @dhanushkraja’s words cut deep. AI’s potential is thrilling, but rewriting a classic’s soul crosses a line. Let’s champion innovation and respect for creators—time for clear guardrails to keep cinema authentic.”
Another added:
“Raanjhanaa is a great movie because of its climax. You change the ending, you ruin the movie. That last dialogue was the heartbeat of the film.”
But others dismissed the outrage, accusing Dhanush of overreacting or being upset over not being consulted or compensated. One user posted:
“This is just a short re-release with an alternate ending. It’s not a big deal. We all know the original ending—it still exists.”
Another wrote:
“AI is bad, yes, but seeing Kundan open his eyes… that healed something in me.”
The Debate Around AI in Cinema
The incident has reignited debate around the use of artificial intelligence in filmmaking. While AI offers exciting possibilities, critics argue that it also poses risks to artistic authenticity and creator rights.
With actors and filmmakers voicing concern, the industry may soon face new ethical and legal questions: How far should AI go in reshaping cinema? And who gets to decide what part of a story is sacred?
As Dhanush’s reaction shows, not all technological changes are welcome—especially when they rewrite a film that many considered perfect just the way it was.
