Parts of Delhi are on red alert following a spell of unseasonal rainfall and intense thunderstorms that have disrupted normal life across the capital. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that these conditions are likely to persist for several more hours, urging residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
Several areas in Delhi-NCR experienced significant rainfall accompanied by strong winds and lightning on Sunday evening, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic congestion. The Safdarjung Observatory recorded 26.8 mm of rainfall, while areas like Palam Ridge received even heavier downpours. This sudden change in weather comes after a prolonged dry spell and a scorching heatwave, catching many off guard.
The IMD attributes the rainfall to a confluence of western disturbances and lower-level easterly winds. This interaction has created favourable conditions for widespread precipitation over Northwest India, including Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh. The alert level signifies a high probability of severe weather, potentially leading to disruptions in power supply, damage to property, and hazardous travel conditions.
Delhi’s electricity distribution companies have reported several instances of power outages due to the strong winds and lightning strikes. Teams are working to restore power supply, but officials warn that further disruptions are possible until the weather stabilizes. Residents are advised to avoid venturing outdoors unless absolutely necessary and to stay away from electrical poles and waterlogged areas.
Impact on Travel and Daily Life
Transportation services have been severely affected. Flights at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) experienced delays and diversions, causing inconvenience to passengers. The Delhi Metro also reported some disruptions on certain lines due to waterlogging, although services were largely operational. Road traffic crawled to a standstill in many areas due to poor visibility and waterlogged streets.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has deployed teams to clear waterlogged roads and ensure smooth drainage. However, the sheer volume of rainfall has overwhelmed the city’s drainage system in several locations. Authorities are also monitoring the water levels in major rivers and canals around Delhi to prevent any potential flooding.
The sudden rainfall has also brought respite from the intense heat, with temperatures plummeting significantly. The maximum temperature recorded on Sunday was 39.8 degrees Celsius, which is expected to fall further in the coming days. However, health officials are advising people to take precautions against seasonal illnesses, which are common during sudden weather changes.
The IMD forecasts that the intensity of the rainfall will gradually decrease from Monday afternoon. However, scattered showers are expected to continue for the next 24-48 hours. Residents are urged to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts and follow the advisories issued by the authorities. The red alert remains in place for several districts, signifying the continuing need for caution.
