Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) are bracing for more rainfall today, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow and orange alerts for several areas. The ongoing heavy rains have already caused significant disruptions, including the Yamuna River crossing the 207-meter mark for the fifth time since 1963, causing flooding in various parts of Delhi.
Weather Forecast
The IMD has forecast light rain and thunderstorms for parts of Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad, with a yellow alert in place. An orange alert has been issued for Gurugram, predicting moderate rain. The capital is also expected to see thunderstorms with the minimum temperature around 24°C and a maximum of 33°C.
Flooding and Traffic Disruptions
The continued rainfall has resulted in severe waterlogging, particularly in low-lying areas like Nigambodh Ghat, where the rising Yamuna forced a suspension of cremations. Waterlogging has affected major roads in the city, causing traffic delays and congestion. Several NCR areas, including Noida and Ghaziabad, have been heavily impacted, with schools in these regions shut due to the adverse weather.
Yamuna River Situation
By Wednesday night, the Yamuna was recorded at 207.44 meters, just short of reaching its 1978 flood level. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, with floodwaters already affecting key areas like Ring Road and Civil Lines.
Flight Operations Impacted
SpiceJet has issued an advisory due to the heavy rains, warning that flights to and from Delhi may be delayed or affected. Passengers have been urged to check their flight status before traveling.
Other Areas Affected
Elsewhere in India, continuous rains have caused severe flooding in Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir, with significant casualties reported. In Punjab, floods have claimed 37 lives, while the heavy rainfall in Jammu & Kashmir has caused widespread landslides and flash floods, affecting major roads.
Relief Operations
In response to the ongoing crisis, relief and rescue operations are underway in flood-hit areas, with the government providing immediate financial assistance and deploying rescue teams to evacuate stranded residents.
