Daniel Jones Named Colts’ Starting QB for 2025 Season, Steichen Dismisses ‘Quick Leash’ Concerns

The Indianapolis Colts have officially named Daniel Jones as their starting quarterback for the 2025 NFL season, ending months of speculation about the role. This announcement puts an end to the debate over whether veteran Jones or third-year player Anthony Richardson would lead the offense. For Jones, who joined the Colts in March after stints with the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings, this is a pivotal opportunity to redefine his career and prove his worth.

Daniel Jones Earns QB1 Spot Through Trust and Consistency

Head coach Shane Steichen addressed the media after the announcement, explaining why the Colts decided to go with Jones over Richardson. According to Steichen, the decision boils down to reliability. “He’s our starting quarterback for the season. I don’t want to have a quick leash on that. I feel confident in his abilities,” Steichen said.

While Richardson remains part of the team’s future, Steichen emphasized that Richardson still needs to grow in certain areas before stepping into the starting role. Despite the setback, Richardson reportedly accepted the decision, recognizing that his development is key to eventually earning the top spot.

Why Jones Was Chosen Over Richardson

Steichen highlighted that the choice wasn’t based on raw talent but on who could manage the offense with stability and consistency. Jones brings a wealth of experience, having started 69 out of 70 games over six seasons with the Giants. Throughout his career, he’s completed 64.1% of his passes for 14,582 yards, 70 touchdowns, and 47 interceptions. Though his time in New York didn’t lead to consistent success, his ability to manage games and make key decisions under pressure earned him the starting role in Indianapolis.

Aiming for Stability with Jones at the Helm

By selecting Jones, the Colts are signaling their commitment to stability. While Richardson’s athleticism makes him an exciting prospect for the future, Steichen’s decision reflects a focus on minimizing risks and maintaining consistency in execution. In a league where turnovers and unpredictability often hinder teams, Indianapolis is opting for a steady hand to lead the offense.

For Jones, the 2025 season presents a critical opportunity to prove that he can elevate the Colts’ offense and help the team achieve success. If he performs well, the trust placed in him could mark the start of a career revival.
