The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Maharashtra, forecasting heavy rainfall as Cyclone Shakti intensifies in the Arabian Sea. The alert covers regions including Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions and stay updated on weather forecasts.
IMD’s Warning and Expected Rainfall
According to the IMD, the cyclone is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated places across these districts. The yellow alert indicates that authorities and residents should be prepared for potential disruptions due to adverse weather conditions. The IMD’s regional meteorological center in Mumbai is closely monitoring the cyclone’s movement and intensity.
The weather department has also warned of possible flooding in low-lying areas and urged local administrations to ensure adequate measures are in place to manage any emergencies. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along the Maharashtra coast for the next 48 hours.
District-wise Preparedness
Each district administration is coordinating with disaster management teams to ensure prompt response in case of any eventuality. Control rooms have been set up to monitor the situation and provide timely assistance to citizens. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams are also on standby to assist in rescue and relief operations if required.
In Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has activated its disaster management cell and is coordinating with various agencies to manage any rain-related incidents. Waterlogging pumps are being kept ready to clear water from vulnerable areas. Citizens are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall.
Advisory for Citizens
The IMD has advised citizens to stay indoors as much as possible during heavy rainfall and avoid going near beaches or water bodies. Motorists are cautioned to drive slowly and carefully, avoiding flooded roads. Residents are also urged to keep their mobile phones charged and have emergency kits ready. It is crucial to follow the instructions issued by local authorities and stay informed about the latest weather updates through reliable sources.
The state government is taking all necessary steps to mitigate the impact of Cyclone Shakti and ensure the safety of its citizens. Regular updates and advisories are being issued to keep the public informed about the evolving situation. Collaboration between various government agencies and community participation is key to effectively managing the challenges posed by the cyclone.
The IMD will continue to monitor the cyclone’s progress and issue further updates as necessary. Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant and take all possible precautions to protect themselves and their property.
