The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] has strongly criticised a statement issued by the Indian government regarding recent developments in Venezuela, deeming it “unworthy” and reflective of a disconcerting alignment with United States policy.
The CPI(M) statement, released on November 26th, takes issue with India’s expression of hope for a “peaceful and democratic resolution” of the situation in Venezuela. The party argues this phrasing implicitly endorses the US’s long-standing campaign to destabilise the Venezuelan government under President Nicolás Maduro, particularly the ongoing threats of economic sanctions and potential military intervention.
The party’s core objection stems from its view that the US policy towards Venezuela constitutes interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign nation. The CPI(M) pointedly contrasts India’s stated commitment to non-alignment and respect for national sovereignty with what it perceives as a tacit endorsement of US interventionist actions.
US Pressure and Venezuela’s Situation
Venezuela has been embroiled in a deep political and economic crisis for several years, exacerbated by falling oil prices, mismanagement, and US sanctions. While the US government maintains that its sanctions are targeted at preventing human rights abuses and corruption, critics, including the CPI(M), argue that they have caused significant hardship for the Venezuelan population and contributed to the country’s instability.
The CPI(M) contends that legitimising US pressure only serves to worsen the plight of the Venezuelan people. They believe a more constructive approach would involve advocating for dialogue between all stakeholders in Venezuela – the government, opposition groups, and regional actors – without preconditions or external interference.
The party’s criticism extends to the timing of the Indian statement, which coincided with heightened US rhetoric regarding the possibility of revisiting sanctions and increasing pressure on the Maduro government in anticipation of the 2024 presidential elections. This timing, the CPI(M) suggests, further reinforces the impression of India aligning itself with US objectives.
India has traditionally maintained relatively cordial relations with Venezuela, largely focused on oil trade. Experts suggest the Indian government’s recent statement may reflect an attempt to navigate a complex geopolitical landscape and to avoid potential repercussions from the US, given India’s growing strategic partnership with Washington.
However, the CPI(M) firmly believes that such considerations should not come at the expense of principles of sovereignty and non-interference. The party reiterated its support for a peaceful, negotiated solution to the Venezuelan crisis, one that respects the country’s independence and allows its people to determine their own future.
The CPI(M)’s condemnation represents a significant dissent within India’s political spectrum, highlighting differing perspectives on how to address the volatile situation in Venezuela and the role of external actors in resolving it. They called on the Indian government to reconsider its stance and adopt a more principled and independent approach.
