Both Coolie and War 2, the star-studded Independence Day releases featuring Rajinikanth and Hrithik Roshan (with Jr NTR), have failed to surpass box office expectations despite their massive budgets. Although both films crossed the Rs 200 crore mark at the domestic box office, they have struggled to maintain momentum, especially following the monumental success of Saiyaara.
Box Office Numbers: Week 1 Breakdown
By the end of Week 1, War 2 had earned Rs 204.25 crore at the domestic box office, while Coolie, Rajinikanth’s highest-ever opener, grossed Rs 229.75 crore.
War 2, which marked Jr NTR’s Hindi debut, had a promising opening day, grossing Rs 29 crore, followed by Rs 44 crore on Independence Day. However, the numbers sharply declined in the subsequent days, with the film receiving mixed reviews from both critics and audiences.
Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, had a strong opening but struggled to find traction in the Hindi-speaking market, despite performing well in the Tamil belt. The film’s success was hampered by the stiff competition from War 2 and other films in the market.
Taran Adarsh’s Take on Both Films
Trade expert Taran Adarsh weighed in on the performances of both films, telling NDTV, “War 2 is a flop. It’s the first flop from the YRF Spy Universe. Coolie did well in Tamil Nadu but couldn’t make a significant impact in the Hindi market.”
Adarsh emphasized the importance of content over star power, noting, “War 2 is a very weak film. It’s the content that always makes the difference.”
When asked about the impact of the Saiyaara storm on the box office performance of Coolie and War 2, he commented, “The Saiyaara wave also slowed down after Mahavatar Narsimha released.”
The Saiyaara Effect
Saiyaara was a promotional phenomenon that set an unprecedented record as the highest-earning romantic film in Hindi cinema’s history. Starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, the film’s massive success forced other movies, like Ajay Devgn’s Son of Sardaar 2, to shift release dates to avoid direct competition. Over its first few weeks, Saiyaara outperformed films with big stars, including Housefull 5 and Raid 2, making it a dominant force at the box office.
About the Films
Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, is Rajinikanth’s 171st film. The movie features an ensemble cast including Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Upendra, and Aamir Khan in a cameo. Produced by Sun Pictures, the action-packed film had high expectations but couldn’t keep pace in the pan-India market.
War 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to the 2019 blockbuster, directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced by YRF. The film stars Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, and Kiara Advani. Despite its star-studded cast and being a part of the YRF Spy Universe, it faced challenges in meeting the expectations set by its predecessor and other competing films.
