Coolie Movie Review & Box Office: Rajinikanth’s Action Drama Opens Strong but Gets Mixed Reactions

The much-awaited Tamil action drama Coolie, starring Superstar Rajinikanth and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, hit theatres today amid massive fanfare. Touted as one of the biggest Indian releases in recent times, the film has already set advance booking records, selling tickets worth over ₹41 crore before release day.

Despite clashing with YRF’s War 2 (starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR), Coolie is far ahead in buzz and box office momentum. By 9 AM on Day 1, the film had reportedly earned ₹11.63 crore in India across all languages, with projections suggesting a possible ₹100 crore opening day.

Star-Studded Cast and Cameos

The film features a powerhouse ensemble including Aamir Khan (in a cameo), Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Soubin Shahir, and Sathyaraj. This marks the first collaboration between Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj, whose previous hits like Vikram and Leo have expanded the so-called Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU). While Lokesh has denied that Coolie is part of the LCU, fan theories continue to swirl.

Early Reviews: Strong First Half, Mixed Second Half

  • Many viewers have praised the pre-interval block, Anirudh Ravichander’s music, and action sequences.
  • Some fans have called the second half sluggish, with one describing it as having a “Vikram hangover”.
  • Nagarjuna’s role has been criticized as underutilised, and several fans felt Aamir Khan’s cameo was underwhelming.
  • Despite these criticisms, the climax flashback scene is receiving applause from Rajinikanth fans.

Fan Celebrations & Star Support

Across Tamil Nadu and overseas markets, fans celebrated the release with milk abhishekams, fireworks, and dance performances outside theatres. Kamal Haasan congratulated Rajinikanth on his 50th year in cinema, wishing Coolie global success.

At a promotional event, Nagarjuna praised Rajinikanth’s guidance on set, while Anirudh called Shruti Haasan’s performance “possibly the finest of her career”.

Box Office Outlook

With advance bookings strong, a loyal fan base, and a festive release atmosphere, Coolie is poised for a record-breaking weekend despite mixed critical reactions. The big question remains: can the film’s story sustain its hype beyond opening day?
