Rajinikanth’s Coolie continues to make waves at the box office, but it saw a significant dip in earnings on its sixth day of release. The film, which has garnered Rs 216 crore across all languages so far, earned Rs 9.50 crore on Tuesday, marking its first single-digit collection since release.
Breaking Down the Numbers
On Monday, Coolie earned Rs 12 crore, with Rs 7.75 crore from Tamil and Rs 1.85 crore from Hindi. On its first day (August 14), the film earned a whopping Rs 65 crore, with Rs 44.5 crore coming from Tamil alone. The second day saw the film rake in Rs 54.75 crore at the domestic box office.
Despite mixed reviews, Coolie had a strong start, emerging as Rajinikanth’s all-time highest opener. The film missed the record for the highest opening in Tamil cinema, as Leo—directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and starring Vijay—claimed the top spot with Rs 66 crore.
By Saturday, the film had earned Rs 39.5 crore across all languages. However, as the word-of-mouth started to spread, the numbers began to decline, as seen with the Tuesday earnings.
About Coolie
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie marks Rajinikanth’s 171st film. The movie also stars Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, and features a cameo by Aamir Khan. Produced by Sun Pictures under Kalanithi Maran’s banner, Coolie follows the story of a man navigating through high-stakes situations.
Film critic Saibal Chatterjee gave the movie 3 out of 5 stars, stating that Coolie is Rajinikanth’s show all the way, with his character Deva taking center stage in a “man’s world.”
Despite the early box office success, Coolie faces tough competition from War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, which also released on August 14.
