The Indian National Congress has launched a scathing attack on the Election Commission of India (ECI), alleging a “sinister” attempt to undermine democracy through the introduction of the Systematically Important Register (SIR). According to Congress leaders, this new system, purportedly designed to streamline the electoral process, could instead be used to manipulate voter data and disenfranchise certain segments of the population.
Addressing a press conference, senior Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala stated that the SIR lacks transparency and could potentially be exploited by individuals with vested interests. He asserted that the ECI has not adequately explained the rationale behind the SIR, nor has it addressed concerns regarding data security and privacy. The Congress party has demanded an immediate halt to the SIR implementation until a thorough and impartial investigation is conducted.

They have called upon the ECI to defer the implementation of the SIR until after the elections to ensure a level playing field for all political parties.
The ECI has yet to officially respond to the Congress party’s allegations. However, sources within the commission have indicated that the SIR is intended to enhance the efficiency of voter registration and prevent fraudulent activities. They maintain that the system is designed with robust security measures and that all data will be protected in accordance with established privacy standards.
