Chance to Impress as Australia Prepare to Counter Maharaj’s Challenge Again

The omission of Shreyas Iyer from India’s squad for the Asia Cup has created quite a stir, particularly on social media. Many fans and cricket experts have expressed their surprise, with some even questioning the selection committee’s decision. Among those voicing their concerns are former cricketers R. Ashwin and Irfan Pathan, both of whom have raised questions about the exclusion of Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal.

A Complex Selection Situation

The controversy stems from the Asia Cup’s guidelines, which permit a squad of 17 players. As per these rules, the squad can have 17 players and 8 officials, totaling 25 individuals in the touring group. The clause in the guidelines reads: “Each squad will comprise seventeen (17) players, and eight (8) team officials.”

In his defense, chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained the decision by stating, “With regards to Shreyas, we’ll have to tell you who he can replace. Again, no fault of his, nor is it ours. It’s just that we can only pick 15, and at the moment, he will have to wait for his chance.” Regarding the omission of Jaiswal, Agarkar added, “With Abhishek Sharma’s performances and his ability to bowl, it gives us some flexibility. One of these guys will always miss out, and unfortunately, Yashasvi might have to wait.”

While Agarkar’s justification for sticking to a 15-player squad sounds reasonable, some still believe that the backlash could have been avoided, especially given the uproar surrounding Iyer’s exclusion.

MSK Prasad’s Perspective

Former chief selector MSK Prasad shared his thoughts, emphasizing not only Iyer’s exclusion but also Mohammed Siraj’s absence. He questioned why Siraj, who was the Player of the Match in the last Asia Cup final, was not included. “Unless Siraj is being rested for workload management, he should have been in the squad,” Prasad noted. He also pointed out that the selectors could have gone with a full-strength squad, given that there was room for 17 players.

A BCCI source mentioned that the selectors felt there was no need for a 17-player squad as all areas were adequately covered. While some countries, including Pakistan and Hong Kong, have confirmed their 17-member squads, others have yet to announce their final teams.

Pragyan Ojha Joins Asia Cup Technical Panel

In another development, former India spinner Pragyan Ojha has been appointed to the technical committee of the Asia Cup. As a member of the panel, Ojha will help resolve cricketing disputes and approve or reject mid-tournament replacements. The committee is also responsible for ensuring that the tournament runs smoothly, from appointing match officials to enforcing the rules.

Ojha, who played 24 Tests and 18 ODIs for India, is a respected figure in Indian cricket. He has also served on the IPL Governing Council and represented the Indian Cricketers’ Association (ICA).
