CAFA Nations Cup: India Clinch Bronze On Debut With Dramatic Shootout Win Over Oman

Hisor, Tajikistan: The Indian men’s football team scripted history on Monday, securing a bronze medal in their maiden appearance at the CAFA Nations Cup. The Blue Tigers defeated Oman 3-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

How The Match Unfolded

India started brightly, with Vikram Partap Singh and Lallianzuala Chhangte causing problems on the wings. Defender Anwar Ali came close early on, but his header was kept out by Omani goalkeeper Ibrahim Al Mukhaini.

Oman struck first in the 55th minute when Abdullah Fawaz’s flick released Jameel Al Yahmadi, who slotted home at the far post. But India struck back in the 80th minute as substitute Udanta Singh Kumam bravely headed in from a long throw, with the goal confirmed after a lengthy VAR check.

Oman’s Ali Al Busaidi was sent off in extra time, giving India the numerical advantage, but despite late pressure, the game went to penalties.

The Shootout Drama

In the shootout, Chhangte, Rahul Bheke, and Jithin MS converted for India, while Anwar Ali’s shot was saved and Udanta fired wide. Oman managed just two successful spot kicks, with Harib Al Saadi and Ahmed Al Kaabi missing.

The decisive moment came when Indian captain Gurpreet Singh Sandhu dived full stretch to deny Al Yahmadi, sealing India’s place on the podium and sparking jubilant celebrations.
