A Bengaluru woman’s frustrating experience on the Delhi Metro has reignited an online conversation about noise etiquette and civic sense in shared public spaces.
The incident came to light after the woman, identified as Ananya Gupta on X, shared how her quiet metro ride was repeatedly disrupted by passengers playing social media videos at full volume. In her post, she recalled reading during the journey when a man nearby began watching Reels loudly. She confronted him, asking him to lower the volume since it was a public space. To her surprise, he complied.
However, the relief was short-lived. At the very next station, another passenger sat beside her and started playing videos loudly again. This time, she chose not to say anything, writing that it felt pointless to keep asking.
Her post struck a chord with many commuters and quickly drew reactions from users sharing similar experiences. Several people agreed that loud phone usage in public transport has become increasingly common, with many questioning why some passengers ignore basic courtesy.
One user shared how even a ringing phone in a foreign metro drew disapproving stares, highlighting how expectations around noise differ across cultures. Others echoed the frustration, pointing out that the simple use of earphones could avoid discomfort for everyone around.
Some commenters also touched on the discomfort of confronting strangers, noting that people often hesitate to speak up depending on who is causing the disturbance.
The post has since fueled a broader discussion on social awareness, respect for shared spaces, and whether public etiquette is being lost amid constant digital consumption.
