Dhaka, Bangladesh – A Hindu journalist, Pranab Kumar Roy, was critically injured after being shot in the head by unidentified assailants on a motorcycle in Bangladesh’s Satkhira district on Friday. The attack has sparked widespread condemnation and heightened concerns about the safety of journalists and religious minorities in the country.
According to police reports, Roy, the Satkhira correspondent for the Bengali-language daily Samakal, was ambushed while returning home from work. The assailants, travelling on a motorcycle, opened fire on him at point-blank range before fleeing the scene. Local residents immediately rushed Roy to Satkhira Sadar Hospital, where he received initial treatment before being transferred to a specialized hospital in Dhaka for more advanced care.
His condition remains critical and doctors have stated his chances of survival are uncertain. The attack has prompted a large security presence in the Satkhira district. District police chief, Kazi Monzur Rahman, reported that a manhunt has been launched to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. “We are investigating the incident from all angles, and we are committed to bringing the criminals to justice,” Rahman stated in a press briefing.
The motive behind the attack is currently unknown, though authorities are exploring potential links to Roy’s professional work and his religious identity. Bangladesh has witnessed a rise in attacks against secular bloggers, writers, and journalists in recent years, often carried out by extremist groups. Members of the Hindu and other religious minority communities have also reported increasing harassment and violence.
Growing Concerns over Press Freedom
Journalist organizations have strongly condemned the attack, calling for a thorough and impartial investigation. The Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) and the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) have expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation for press freedom in Bangladesh, asserting the attack as a direct threat to independent journalism.
The BFUJ, in a statement, demanded immediate arrest of the attackers and called on the government to ensure the safety and security of all journalists in the country. They also urged for increased protection for Hindu and other minority communities who are often targeted by religious extremists.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) also released a statement urging Bangladeshi authorities to swiftly investigate the shooting of Pranab Kumar Roy and ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable. CPJ noted that while no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, the pattern of violence against journalists in Bangladesh suggests it could be linked to the victim’s reporting.
This incident occurs as Bangladesh prepares for scheduled elections, a period often marked with heightened political tensions and increased risk for those critical of the ruling party or extremist ideologies. The government has pledged to protect journalists and religious minorities, but critics argue that more needs to be done to address the root causes of the violence and ensure accountability for perpetrators.
