Kolkata – Abhishek Banerjee, a prominent leader of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), dramatically presented three individuals at a recent rally, claiming they were officially listed as deceased voters. This move is a direct challenge to both the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging discrepancies in the voter list and potential electoral malpractices.
Addressing a large gathering, Banerjee displayed identity cards and other documents purportedly proving the individuals – identified as residents of Diamond Harbour, his Lok Sabha constituency – were officially recorded as having passed away. He accused the ECI of negligence and the BJP of attempting to manipulate the electoral process. Banerjee stated the individuals were alive and actively participated in daily life, yet remained marked as deceased in official records.
“This is not an isolated incident,” Banerjee asserted, claiming widespread irregularities in the voter lists across West Bengal. He demanded a thorough investigation into the matter and called for stringent action against those responsible for the alleged manipulation. He further alleged that the discrepancies were a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise eligible voters and influence the outcome of the upcoming elections.
The TMC leader’s accusations come amidst heightened political tensions in West Bengal, with the state poised for crucial parliamentary elections. The BJP has been aggressively campaigning to unseat the TMC, which has been in power for over a decade. The ECI has faced criticism in the past regarding the accuracy of voter lists and the fairness of the electoral process.
ECI and BJP Respond
The ECI has yet to issue a formal response to Banerjee’s specific allegations. However, officials have stated that they are committed to ensuring a free and fair election and will investigate any credible complaints of electoral malpractice. BJP leaders have dismissed Banerjee’s claims as a desperate attempt to deflect attention from the TMC’s alleged corruption and misgovernance. A BJP spokesperson stated that the TMC was known for its “politics of intimidation and manipulation” and that Banerjee’s allegations were simply a continuation of this pattern.
