At 45, Venus Williams Fights Back Tears After US Open Exit, Unsure About Future Plans

Tennis legend Venus Williams bowed out of the US Open in the opening round on Monday, raising fresh questions about her future in the sport. The 45-year-old American, a two-time US Open champion, lost to Czech 11th seed Karolina Muchova in three sets — 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 — at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Emotional Exit After Strong Fight

Williams, who returned to competitive action in July after a 16-month break, entered the main draw via a wild card. Despite the loss, she showcased flashes of her trademark power against an opponent 16 years younger.

Reflecting on her performance, Venus noted she felt in much better shape compared to their last US Open meeting in 2020:
“When I think about the match I played against her in 2020, I was so uncomfortable. I wasn’t well. I was in so much pain. Today it’s night and day how much better I felt.”

The seven-time Grand Slam singles champion became emotional while acknowledging the chance to play pain-free.
“For me, getting back on the court was about giving myself a chance to play more healthy. When you play unhealthy, it’s not just physical, it’s mental too. It was nice to be freer.”

Future Still Unclear

Williams revealed she has no plans to compete for the rest of the year due to travel concerns and was non-committal about the Australian Open in January.
“That’s kind of far too,” she said when asked about Melbourne, adding that she would focus on doing what feels right for her.

She also expressed gratitude for the wildcard entry, acknowledging the tournament organisers’ faith in her despite recent struggles with form and injuries.
“I wasn’t lucky with my health. But there were a lot of people who believed in me, and I’m very grateful for that chance.”

A Career Defined by Resilience

Williams, who turned professional in 1994, has inspired generations with her longevity, power-packed game, and resilience. While her future on tour remains uncertain, she underlined the joy of still being able to play an “exciting brand of tennis.”
