The Assam State Election Commission has officially released the final electoral roll for the state, marking a significant step ahead of upcoming elections. The list sees a reduction of 243,000 names from the draft roll following a rigorous verification process. Officials cited duplication, migration, and deaths as primary reasons for the exclusions.

The final list now contains approximately 22.8 million eligible voters, with women constituting nearly 49% of the electorate. Chief Electoral Officer Anurag Goel stated that the commission followed due diligence in removing ineligible entries. “Our focus remains on maintaining a transparent and fraud-free electoral process,” he said during a press briefing in Guwahati.

District-wise data reveals varying trends, with some regions reporting higher deletion rates than others. Dhubri and Nagaon districts accounted for nearly 30% of the total deletions, raising questions about historical enrollment practices. Meanwhile, new voter registrations crossed 180,000, primarily comprising first-time voters aged 18–19 years. The commission has launched awareness campaigns to encourage participation among youth and marginalized communities.

The Indian National Congress has demanded a white paper detailing the rationale behind each exclusion. Bharatiya Janata Party representatives, however, applauded the move, calling it a long-overdue correction to bloated voter lists. “This rigorous exercise strengthens democracy by eliminating ghost voters,” said Assam BJP president Bhabesh Kalita.
