AMD’s Upcoming RDNA5 GPUs Could Bring Back High-End Competition

August 27, 2025 – AMD’s next-generation RDNA5 graphics cards, expected in 2026 or 2027, may finally challenge Nvidia at the very top of the GPU market. According to early reports, the flagship RDNA5 chip could feature up to 96 compute units (CUs) — a 50% increase over the Radeon RX 9070 XT.

If true, the design would deliver more than 6,000 shader units, supported by a smaller manufacturing process, new architecture, and potentially faster memory. This could mark AMD’s return to competing directly with Nvidia’s most powerful cards after years of focusing on upper mid-range performance.

AMD’s Last Top Contender

The Radeon RX 7900 XTX remains AMD’s fastest card, but it never fully matched Nvidia’s RTX 4080 Super or RTX 4090. RDNA5 could change that, though industry watchers caution that Nvidia’s extreme “Titan-class” GPUs may still remain in a separate tier.

Expected Lineup

  • Flagship model: Up to 96 CUs, possibly with a 512-bit memory bus.
  • Other models: Variants with 40, 24, and 12 CUs, targeting mid-range and entry-level buyers.
  • Memory: High-end cards are likely to use GDDR7, while lower-end models could experiment with LPDDR5X.

Early Stage Development

There’s no confirmation that AMD has begun taping out silicon for RDNA5, so details remain speculative. Still, if the rumors hold, RDNA5 could provide the first serious competition to Nvidia’s flagship GPUs in years — potentially driving down prices and pushing innovation in high-end gaming graphics.
