Amazon is reportedly planning to cut between 800 and 1,000 jobs in India as part of its global restructuring strategy driven by the increasing adoption of artificial intelligence.
The layoffs will span multiple functions—including finance, human resources, and technology—with the steepest cuts expected in teams that collaborate closely with Amazon’s global operations.
When asked about the development, an Amazon India spokesperson referred to a note from Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology, Beth Galetti, who said:
“The reductions we are sharing today are a continuation of this work to get even stronger by further reducing bureaucracy, removing layers, and shifting resources to ensure we’re investing in our biggest bets.”
AI’s Growing Role in Amazon’s Workforce
This marks Amazon’s second major round of layoffs in as many years. The move follows CEO Andy Jassy’s earlier comments that artificial intelligence will significantly change the company’s workforce structure.
Jassy had noted that Amazon’s use of Agentic AI will “change the way our work is done,” leading to fewer people in traditional roles and more opportunities in AI-driven functions.
“It’s hard to know exactly where this nets out over time, but in the next few years, we expect this will reduce our total corporate workforce as we gain efficiency from using AI extensively across the company,” he said.
Massive AI Investment and Workforce Shift
According to reports, Amazon is investing over $100 billion in AI this year, a sharp increase from $83 billion in 2024. While AI-related hiring continues to grow, other roles—especially those that can be automated—are facing cuts.
Globally, Amazon employs around 1.55 million people, including roughly 350,000 corporate employees. The company’s ongoing transition toward AI integration is expected to replace or eliminate as many as 600,000 jobs in the US by 2027.
