Sandalwood actor Darshan, currently in prison in connection with the Renukaswamy murder case, made an emotional appeal to the court on Tuesday, asking for basic amenities in the Parappana Agrahara jail. In a dramatic plea, he even suggested he would rather be fed poison than endure his current conditions.
The actor claimed that he had been denied fundamental facilities during his stay at the Bengaluru prison since August 14. He expressed distress over being confined to his cell without adequate movement and mentioned suffering from a fungal infection due to the lack of proper care. He further complained that he had not seen the sun for 30 days and alleged that the prison officials had failed to provide sufficient blankets and other essentials to cope with the cool weather.
The court, however, rejected Darshan’s dramatic appeal and informed him that such requests were not permissible. The judge emphasized that no special treatment would be granted to Darshan, clarifying that the actor would not be allowed to receive any celebrity privileges. Instead, the judge directed the prison authorities to ensure that Darshan and his fellow inmates were provided with basic facilities as per the prison manual.
Additionally, the court allowed Darshan’s request for an extra bed, pillow, and bedsheet, ensuring that all provisions comply with the established prison guidelines. The judge also rejected the prosecution’s proposal to transfer Darshan to a different prison, allowing him to remain in Parappana Agrahara.
The court instructed prison officials to treat Darshan as a “civil prisoner” until his trial is complete, as he has not been convicted yet. It also gave permission for Darshan to receive or purchase necessities such as food, clothing, and writing materials, as long as they comply with the prison’s regulations.
