Azmatullah Omarzai Reflects on His All-Round Performance After Afghanistan’s Win Over Hong Kong

Afghanistan kicked off their Asia Cup 2025 campaign with a dominant win over Hong Kong, powered by a stellar all-round performance from Azmatullah Omarzai. Omarzai made an impact with both bat and ball, smashing 53 runs off 21 balls and claiming impressive bowling figures of 1 for 4.

Omarzai’s Belief and Quickfire Fifty

After the game, Omarzai reflected on the challenges of batting lower down the order. He credited his success to the belief his captain and coach had in him, saying, “Very tough batting in the lower order, all about belief. The captain and coach have belief in me, and I was just trying to back myself and hit straight with the ball coming on nicely.”

Omarzai’s maiden T20I half-century came in just 20 balls, with five of his sixes hit between extra cover and deep midwicket. Coming in at 95 for 4 in the 13th over, Omarzai partnered with opener Sediqullah Atal (73* off 52) to stabilize the innings. Together, they produced 69 runs in the last four overs, including three fours and six sixes, helping Afghanistan set a strong total.

Batting or Bowling All-Rounder?

When asked about his role as a batting or bowling all-rounder, Omarzai was clear: “I think I am both. When I get bowling, I feel I am a proper bowler; when I bat, I feel I am a proper batter. It is 50-50.” His well-rounded performance was a key factor in Afghanistan’s victory.

Rashid Khan on Afghanistan’s Performance

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan praised the team’s overall performance but highlighted the concern over early wickets. “Good to put a total on the board. In the last series as well, early wickets – that is very key for us and we have to look into it. Upcoming games are very important, and that is an area if we can make it better… overall, it was a great performance,” Rashid said.

He also acknowledged the importance of Afghanistan’s three-pronged spin attack, especially when defending totals. “If you have good spinners, it puts extra pressure. If you have runs on the board, with batters trying to take risks, that’s when you’re more effective,” Rashid added.

Afghanistan has won 12 out of 16 T20Is when batting first since January 2024, but only three out of 11 when chasing, highlighting an area for improvement. “In T20, we have to chase as well, so the mentality has to be to chase well and have a good record,” Rashid said.

Selection Dilemma and Team Depth

Despite the absence of 24-year-old Mujeeb Ur Rahman against Hong Kong, Afghanistan fielded six bowling options, showcasing the team’s depth. Rashid admitted that leaving out key players like Mujeeb and Noor Ali Zadran for certain matches was a tough call. “To keep Mujeeb out is a tough decision, then Noor as well in some games… You have to see who is more successful against a particular batter. The good thing is I have options, and that makes the job easier,” he concluded.
