New Delhi: Former West Indies star Chris Gayle has voiced his support for India batter Sarfaraz Khan, expressing disappointment over his continued absence from the Test squad despite strong performances in domestic and international cricket.
Gayle’s Backing For Sarfaraz
Speaking on Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube channel, Gayle called Sarfaraz his “favourite among current Indian players” and said the youngster has done enough to deserve a longer run in the national team.
“He should be in the Test side, at least in the squad. He scored a century against England at home, and then he wasn’t picked. I saw a post recently about his weight loss, but even when he was heavier, he was scoring runs. That was never an issue,” Gayle remarked.
A Proven Run-Scorer
Sarfaraz has built a formidable reputation in domestic cricket, with multiple triple centuries in first-class cricket. However, after missing the Australia series and being left out of the recent Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England, his Test career remains stalled.
So far, Sarfaraz has featured in six Tests, scoring 371 runs at an average of 37.1, including one century and three half-centuries.
Waiting For Another Chance
Gayle highlighted the importance of giving consistent opportunities to talents like Sarfaraz. “India has so much talent, but players like him deserve a fair run,” he said.
For now, Sarfaraz continues to wait on the sidelines, hopeful that selectors will hand him another chance to prove his value in the longest format.
