England ended their ODI series against South Africa on a high, registering the biggest winning margin in men’s ODI history with a thumping 342-run victory in Southampton.
Bethell Breaks Through
Youngster Jacob Bethell, long considered one of England’s brightest batting prospects, finally delivered his maiden international hundred. The 21-year-old left-hander struck a sparkling 110 off 82 balls, including 16 boundaries and three sixes.
Bethell shared a 182-run stand with Joe Root, who anchored the innings with a measured 100 off 96 balls. Earlier, opener Jamie Smith provided momentum with 62, while skipper Jos Buttler finished the innings in style, blasting 62 not out from 32 deliveries.
England posted 414-5, their highest ODI total since 2022 and their best at home since 2018. Bethell also became the second-youngest Englishman to score an ODI century, behind David Gower.
South Africa Collapse
Chasing 415, South Africa crumbled to 72 all out in just 20.5 overs. Jofra Archer produced a devastating new-ball spell, reducing the visitors to 24-6 with sheer pace and hostility. He finished with 4-18, while Adil Rashid picked up 3-13.
South Africa’s batting fell apart after captain Aiden Markram edged Archer early. Not a single batter crossed 20, with Henry Bosch top-scoring. Their effort was compounded by sloppy fielding and 19 wides, including a dropped catch when Bethell was on 44.
A Record-Breaking Win
The margin of 342 runs surpassed the previous record for the heaviest ODI defeat, underlining England’s dominance. Though South Africa had already secured the series 2-1 with wins at Headingley and Lord’s, the result provided England with much-needed confidence after recent struggles in the 50-over format.
What They Said
- Jacob Bethell: “It feels unbelievable to finally get my first hundred. Doing it in such a big win makes it even more special. Hopefully, this is just the start.”
- Jofra Archer: “I just wanted to bowl straight and hard. Some days you get wickets, some days you don’t—today it worked. Playing three games in a row means a lot.”
- Temba Bavuma (SA captain): “We were poor in all departments—bowling, fielding, and batting. Against Archer and Carse, we had no chance.”
What’s Next
